Six people you want in your friend group

The term “squad” is used to describe a group of friends. An ideal squad would look perfect, do everything together, and be able to conquer the entire world.

The celebrity friend groups set unrealistic goals that no one could ever achieve. Taylor Swift’s #squadgoals aren’t perfect. Even if I had the perfect “squad”, complete with flawless Instagram Stories, it wouldn’t bring me lasting joy or satisfaction.

I began to think about my squad goals and who I would like in my squad. What are the qualities of a squad which will encourage me to follow Jesus and be lasting? We are often pushed by peer pressure to the world of fading. Who is pushing me towards the eternal, and the One that matters most?

I have a list of people who I would like to be part of my squad.

1. One who speaks the truth in love

It’s important to have people in my life who are willing to tell me the truth, even when it is difficult. They poke and prod my tender parts. They speak with love and grace, not just truth. Jesus did it always. Jesus always shared the truth.

2. Someone who listens, cares and encourages

I need people who will not only listen to me, but also ask questions in order to learn more. They are the people who go deep inside my heart and laugh, cry, and celebrate with me. These people carry the weight of life. Christ calls the church into community and calls them to care for each other.

3. Someone I Can Pour My Life Into

As I learn about Christ and grow in my walk with Him, it is a blessing to get to be on His mission every day. I want to invest my life in others. As I invest my life in others, I discover more about God and myself.

4. You are the One Who is pouring life into me

I want to continue growing and learning about the gospel. Learning from someone who’s already been there is one of the best things I can do to grow. I want to learn both from those who are wise and those who have made mistakes. People who have lived life can tell you how they have grown. While I am pouring myself into the lives and experiences of others, it is important that I also learn from them.

5. You can have fun with someone you don’t know.

One of my favourite text threads involves a group of friends with whom I enjoy sharing absolute nonsense. We have fun, laugh, and share ridiculous GIFs. It’s sometimes refreshing for the soul to have fun. God has given us laughter and fun.

6. Someone who sees life very differently than I do

Christ spent a great deal of time with tax collectors and sinners. It’s easy to be around people who think like you. But I can learn so much by interacting with people who think differently than me. People who have lived life in ways that I will never experience, and are able to challenge me. Christ calls us out to share the gospel. Only by establishing relationships with those around us can we do this.

What are the members of your team? Do you have any gaps? Joining a Christian group is a great way to find people to fill these roles. Find Cru communities near you.
